I had already seen some paintings of David Flury, a local painter in the internet and thought: “Wow this guy knows his profession!” One evening I was searching for local exhibitions in Einsiedeln and found an article about an opening the same day with David Flury in the Chärnehus.
I just called my friend and we went there, to see the paintings of this guy. We were late and therefore almost the last guests. So we were inspecting all the paintings and afterwards started a small talk with the painter.
It ended with having several beers with Dave and a nice discussion with him and his wife. Was a very nice evening.
Starting from Einsiedeln there are a lot of mountain bike tours. You can go into all directions. But one of the most beautiful ones is if you go to the hill which is between Einsiedeln and lake Zürich.
From there you have a extraordinary view over the whole lake, back to Einsiedeln and the mountains and you can even see Zürich itself which is about 30 kilometres away.
Once a year there is a big mountain bike race called “Iron bike” which starts and ends in Einsiedeln. The tour goes up and down over several mountains in total more than 2300 meters of altitude. The first up is this hill with the lake Zürich on your left.
But while participating at the race you barely have the time to enjoy the view, so better to make the tour on a sunny sunday morning.
This year winter started perfectly. There was already enough snow beginning of December so that it was possible to do cross country skating in Einsiedeln.
But after Christmas the weather suddenly became so warm that most of the snow was gone within a couple of days: no skiing anymore.
I took the opportunity and used my snow shoes I had bought a couple of years ago and rarely used to walk onto this hill called Spital in the back of Einsiedeln.
The hill or mountain is not hight, barely above timberline and you can start walking in the village. I took a photo from top of the hill. In the background there is lake Sihlsee.
The name of the hill is funny because Spital means in German hospital and you can see the hospital of Einsiedeln from over there.
Cross country skiing
This year, on 1st of December there was already enough snow in Einsiedeln so that it was possible to open the cross country skiing slope. I started immediately with the winter training. The weather was sunny and the slope very well prepared.
This morning I started very early, at 8 am and sun was just raising when I was already behind lake Sihlsee. I stopped and quickly did a photo of the beautiful panorama with the lake and the mountains in the background.
First time I was in Bennau for skiing. Its just 5 minutes with the car on the other side of Einsiedeln. I was surprised, how good you can ski there.
There are 2 escalators in parallel and a small beginners lift for kids. The slope is not too steep and not too flat so you can go down with quite a speed.
With my new skis it was much fun and I even tried to go down in the deep snow besides the prepared slope. But there was just too much snow. I think it was almost one meter. So much that you almost vanished in it.
Living in Einsiedeln is just great with all this possibilities you have in summer and winter.
We have planned to do Pragel Pass with the bike since 2 years. But every summer there was either not enough time or we were not fit enough. But last Sunday it was ok. I had the time, the weather was pretty and I felt that I could do it.
I started early in the morning, was a bit cold but came forward very fast. After 2 hours I was at Klöntalersee and thought that the rest would be easy.
But no, needed another hour to reach the top of the pass and had to stop from time to time because I was totally exhausted.
Going down the other side is very funny. It is one of the steepest streets I have ever driven upon. And I took me another hour until I was down in Schwyz.
From there it is another 25 kilometers back to Einsiedeln, and that’s it. This is a tour you can only do after you have already a couple of miles in your bones. I was at home exactly 2 and a half hour after my start.
Iron bike 2012
This year I was not sure if will be able to do the 77 kilometers. I had not done the tour before this year and did not a lot of kilometers on the bike. Just had the o-tour as kind of training race.
Saturday it was raining heavily almost the whole day. Luckily the race is always on Sunday and Sunday morning sun was shining in Einsiedeln. This means that all the roads upwards were dry but downhills mostly wet or very wet.
This year I enjoyed the race the most since I participate for several reasons: it was nice weather, downhills was wet and I had enough power this year.
And there was something else: this year I had to start in the very last group and there the field is not so crowded. So you do not have to fear constantly that somebody is coming from your back and over turning you downhills. Was much fun!
This year I was already on top of Mythen for the first time. I did the walk with my new sticks. The last time I have used sticks is years ago. Must have been in Austria, when I was young. I bought them for walking with my new snow shoes and can use them also in summer.
There were already a lot of people on top of Mythen, as always on Sundays. I walked with my sticks and arrived on top after 59 minutes. Thats good for the first time in the year.
Down I needed about 40 minutes but was much to fast. I should not walk so fast on this mountain. It is too dangerous for running. And every year 1 or 2 people have an accident and die on this mountain. Unbelievable but some of the people try to climb the mountain with summer shoes. Thats foolish.
In winter I am ofter there for skiing. It is a very nice area.
